The front doors of the Sage Market in Laingsburg look a little different these days. Amongst the flyers and sales ads there are colorful animals from far away places, generated from the minds of Laingsburg’s brightest artists, the students of the Laingsburg Elementary Schools Visual Arts Program. On display were the artwork renderings of “Aboriginal Inspired Animals” a beautiful, creative display of talent and imagination for all to see.
“I have taught in a number of different districts that, and this is my third school year in Laingsburg and my third year teaching elementary. I have historically taught high school and middle school and for about twenty two years and taught a little bit in college.
I all those other locations I’ve so many other opportunities for my students to showcase their art and quite surprised when Laingsburg didn’t have a place.” Laingsburg art teacher Kerry Shadbolt commented on the display. “So I thought where could I possibly put this in a very publicly visible place that is safe and welcoming? The Sage Market was just an excellent spot!”
Support for public art is important and having the opportunity to view, see and share the art is not only exciting for the young students to experience but is enjoyable as a surprise for the shoppers, friends and families across Laingsburg! For the students, Shadbolt explained it was more than just the artwork itself, it was the pride that came with the rewarding experience.
“It’s overwhelmingly positive! I had a co-worker who is also a parent stop me who said ‘My son might have been a little bit on the fence about art before, but he was just so delighted to have his artwork up there. We all came up there and took pictures with it and he had such a point of pride with it. I could tell it elevated his practice…he’s engaged in a way he might not have been.’ Which is so important for them to see their artwork in their community and to have other people react to it.”
