Waverly track and field recently competed in the Lansing Catholic Relays where the boys finished 7th out of ten schools and the girls 11th out of 12. The Warriors top finishers were the men's 4x200 team of Jeremiah Spencer, Jahi Wood, Isaiah Brown and Evan Walker who won the meet with their time of 1:33.26. Other top finishers included senior Keenan Harris who finished 5th in the 300 hurdles, the mens 4x100 team in 4th (Spencer, Davis, Wood, and Walker). The girls top finishers were the 4x400 team of Hollingsworth, Wise, Williams and Jackson who finished 9th overall.
DELTA TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Delta Township recently added in a non verbal communication aid board to the playground at Delta Mills Park. The board will help aid non verbal children in participating in group play as well as gain confidence in their surroundings. One parent we talked to was excited to see the opportunities for their child.
“One of my child’s struggles is socialization with peers. Kids approach him, he looks normal, but doesn't talk. Once they figure this out you unfortunately hear kids say that ‘kid is weird.’ My child is not deaf.” She commented. “This communication board is helpful for them. The same age peers that are empathetic and can engage with them if they are willing to understand, he can talk through the board.”
The non verbal communication board is part of a growing initiative to help inclusivity at the elementary age and below. Beyond the board there are things verbal communicating people can do to help communicate with non verbal people. An article by the Michigan State Extension program offered these suggestions of nonverbal communications as a way to help you communicate more clearly and effectively:
